The Japanese science fiction light novel series 86 is written by Asato Asato and illustrated by Shirabii. In February 2017, ASCII Media Works began putting it out under their Dengeki Bunko imprint. Yen Press has the right to sell the series in North America.
A manga adaptation by Motoki Yoshihara was published in Square Enix’s seinen manga magazine Young Gangan from 2018 to 2022. Two spin-off manga series, 86: Operation High School by Suzume Somemiya and 86: Fragmental Neoteny, will be published in Media Factory’s seinen manga magazine Monthly Comic Alive in June 2020 and April 2021, respectively. A-1 Pictures turned the book into an anime TV show that ran from April 2021 to March 2022.

About the 86 Story
The Empire of Giad and the Republic of San Magnolia have been at war for nine years. Even though the Empire’s autonomous mechanized Legions caused the Republic a lot of damage at first, it has since built its own autonomous units, called Juggernauts, which are controlled by a Handler from a distance.
People think that the war is being fought between machines, but in reality, the Juggernauts are being driven by humans, all of whom are “86,” which is what the Colorata minority of San Magnolia is called. Major Vladilena “Lena” Milizé is an Alba noble and a military officer in San Magnolia. She is an outspoken activist against how badly the Colorata minority is treated and how the Republic government lies to the general public.
She is in charge of the Spearhead Squadron of the Eastern Front, which is an elite unit made up of 86 veterans with names. The Spearhead Squadron is well-known in the military because their leader, Shinei “The Undertaker” Nouzen, is a bad guy. Its notoriety comes from the condition of its commanding officers. Handlers in charge of the squad have gone insane, and some have even tried to kill themselves.
Lena, who supports 86, gets to know the Spearhead Squadron while she is in charge of the group. At the same time, Lena and Shinei find out a dark secret: the Republic and the war with the Empire are not what they seem to be.
