Who was George Floyd? The person that the whole world is talking about, the person that is changing the world but could never see that?
George Perry Floyd Jr. (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020) was an African-American man who unfortunately died during a violent police arrest in Minneapolis. The Protests over that kind of police treatment of George Floyd and other African Americans quickly spread across the United States and internationally. That has to stop, and it starts now.
George was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and raised in Cuney Homes of the Third Ward of Houston, Texas. Friends and family called him Perry and characterized him as a “gentle giant.” George was reportedly between 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) to 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) tall.
He also was playing on the basketball and football teams at Yates High School, and attended South Florida Community College for two years, playing on its basketball team. He decided to returned to Houston where he became an automotive customizer. He was also performing as a rapper “Big Floyd” in the hip-hop group Screwed Up Click. Following a string of arrests for theft and drug possession, Floyd was charged in 2007 for armed robbery in a home invasion; he took a plea deal in 2009 for five years in prison. After his release, he became involved with a local ministry, Resurrection Houston.
In 2014, he moved to Minnesota, where he took jobs driving a truck and providing security at a restaurant. In 2017 he filmed an anti-gun violence video. In 2020 he lost the security job due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The next thing that happened you probably know. He tragically died. This should never happen again to nobody. No person in the world deserves to be threaded like that. We pray for his family and hope that they will come back stronger after this tragedy.
